Stremio ships with OpenSubtitles, which is enough for most popular movies and series. But if you watch in languages other than English, new releases, or older and niche titles, you will often find no subtitles or subtitles that are out of sync. Subtitle add-ons fix that by searching more sources.

This guide covers the best Stremio subtitle add-ons in 2026 and how to set them up.

Quick comparison

SubSense Searching ~10 sources at once Optional free SubDL/SubSource keys (recommended)
SubDL Broad multi-language catalog, episode matching Free API key
SubSource Fast uploads for new releases Depends on version
Stremio Community Subtitles Uploading, editing and resyncing Free account for uploads
GTSubs Auto-translation when nothing exists Not needed
SubMaker Generating subtitles from the audio Not needed

1. OpenSubtitles (built in)

Stremio installs the official OpenSubtitles add-on by default. Subtitles appear in the player’s subtitle menu (the speech-bubble icon). Choose your preferred language in Settings → Player → Subtitles language so it is selected automatically.

OpenSubtitles PRO is a community version of the same library that filters out ads and spam entries. It works without an account; linking a free OpenSubtitles account raises your daily download limit.

2. SubSense — the best all-in-one

SubSense is a subtitle aggregator: it queries several providers at once and returns whichever results arrive first, caching them for later. Sources include OpenSubtitles, Subf2m, Podnapisi, AnimeTosho, Gestdown, BetaSeries, YIFY, TVsubtitles, SubSource and SubDL.

Setup:

  1. Open the configure page at subsense.nepiraw.com.
  2. Select up to five languages.
  3. Optionally (recommended) paste free SubDL and SubSource API keys to unlock those sources.
  4. Choose whether to keep ASS/SSA formats (useful for styled anime subtitles).
  5. Click Install.

If you only install one extra subtitle add-on, make it this one.

3. SubDL

SubDL draws on the SubDL.com database and matches subtitles to specific episodes, with good coverage across many languages. It requires a free SubDL API key, which takes about a minute to create on their site. If you use SubSense, you can paste the same key there instead of installing SubDL separately.

4. SubSource

SubSource pulls from SubSource.net, where the community uploads subtitles quickly after new releases come out, in many languages. It is a good second source for recent episodes.

5. Stremio Community Subtitles

Stremio Community Subtitles loads external subtitles on TV, mobile and VR, and adds a web interface to upload, edit and resync subtitles. Basic use needs no account; a free account unlocks uploading, editing and syncing your changes across devices. It is the best tool if you often fix subtitles yourself.

6. GTSubs and SubMaker — when no subtitle exists

  • GTSubs auto-translates an existing subtitle into your language using Google Translate. Quality is machine-translation level, but it is better than nothing for rare languages.
  • SubMaker generates subtitles from the audio track when no one has published any.

Use these as a last resort, below human-made subtitles.

  1. Keep the built-in OpenSubtitles.
  2. Add SubSense with your languages and free SubDL/SubSource keys.
  3. If you watch in a less common language, add GTSubs as a fallback.
  4. If you often fix timing, add Stremio Community Subtitles.

Avoid installing many overlapping subtitle add-ons: each one adds requests and the subtitle list gets long and repetitive.

Tips for better subtitles

  • Pick a subtitle that matches the release name (for example the same “WEB-DL” or “BluRay” group as the stream). Mismatched releases are the main cause of sync problems.
  • Adjust the delay in the player’s subtitle menu if the subtitle is consistently early or late. More fixes in subtitle sync issues.
  • Anime: most releases have embedded subtitles; see best Stremio anime add-ons.
  • Stream choice matters: with Torrentio + Real-Debrid you can set a priority language so releases with embedded subtitles in your language appear first.
