Stremio’s default catalog (Cinemeta) is built for western movies and TV series. Anime works differently: seasons are split by cour, episodes are often numbered continuously, and titles have Japanese, romaji and English names. With the right add-ons, Stremio becomes a very good anime player.

This guide covers the best Stremio anime add-ons in 2026: catalogs, tracking and the stream add-ons that handle anime correctly.

Quick list

Add-on Type What it adds
Anime Kitsu Catalog + metadata All, Top Rated, Most Popular and Trending anime from Kitsu
Anime Catalogs Catalogs Lists from MyAnimeList, AniList, AniDB, Kitsu, aniSearch, LiveChart.me and Notify.Moe; dub-only filter
Animeo Tracking Updates your AniList progress as you watch
AIOMetadata Metadata Richer catalogs and artwork with MyAnimeList and AniList data
Torrentio / Comet / AIOStreams Streams Anime sources that understand Kitsu IDs

1. Anime Kitsu — the essential anime catalog

Anime Kitsu is an unofficial catalog add-on based on the Kitsu anime database (source on GitHub). It adds four catalogs to your Stremio home and Discover page: All, Top Rated, Most Popular and Trending, plus anime search.

Why it matters: every anime opened from this catalog uses a Kitsu ID (kitsu:ID:episode). Stream add-ons that support Kitsu IDs can then find the exact episode, which avoids the season and episode mismatches you get with IMDb numbering.

Install: search “Anime Kitsu” in Stremio’s Add-ons → Community add-ons list and click Install. No account or debrid service is needed.

2. Anime Catalogs — MyAnimeList, AniList and more

Anime Catalogs adds ready-made lists from MyAnimeList, AniDB, AniList, Kitsu, aniSearch, LiveChart.me and Notify.Moe: seasonal anime, top rated, most popular and more.

  • Show only dubbed content: a filter for people who prefer dubs.
  • Choose catalogs: pick which lists appear on your home screen.
  • Ratings on posters: optional, with an RPDB API key.

Install: open its configure page from the Community add-ons list, choose catalogs and options, and click Install.

3. Animeo — sync progress with AniList

Animeo (Jenrykster/animeo) uses the AniList API to update your watch progress on AniList. It looks up the matching AniList entry from the Kitsu ID (recommended) or, optionally, from Cinemeta names.

  • Log in with the ANILIST LOGIN button on the configure page.
  • Progress is updated when you open an episode (Stremio does not tell add-ons when you finish one).
  • Use it together with Anime Kitsu: the developer recommends Kitsu because its IDs convert reliably to AniList.

If you also track movies and series, Stremio’s built-in Trakt scrobbling covers non-anime content.

4. AIOMetadata — better artwork and anime metadata

AIOMetadata replaces or complements Cinemeta with catalogs, artwork and ratings from TMDB, TVDB, MyAnimeList and AniList. It is optional, but it makes anime pages look much better. Public instances are listed on the ElfHosted recommended add-ons page.

5. Stream add-ons for anime

Catalog add-ons only show titles. To play them you need a stream add-on:

  • Torrentio: its configure page includes anime providers such as Nyaa, HorribleSubs, TokyoTosho, AniDex and nekoBT. Enable them and set your priority language. Setup in our Torrentio + Real-Debrid guide.
  • Comet: supports Kitsu IDs for anime, and works with Real-Debrid, AllDebrid, TorBox and more.
  • AIOStreams: includes anime sources such as AnimeTosho, SeaDex and NekoBT, and lets you set a separate sort order for anime (for example, prefer dual-audio or a specific release group).

See Torrentio alternatives for a full comparison. With a debrid service popular episodes are cached and start instantly; without one, older or niche series may have few seeders.

  1. Install Anime Kitsu (catalog and correct episode IDs).
  2. Add Anime Catalogs if you want MyAnimeList/AniList seasonal lists or dub-only lists.
  3. Install a stream add-on: Torrentio with anime providers enabled, or Comet/AIOStreams.
  4. Optional: Animeo for AniList tracking.
  5. Subtitles: anime releases usually include embedded subtitles. For external ones, see our best Stremio subtitle add-ons.

Always open anime from the Kitsu catalog rather than from Cinemeta search results; that single habit fixes most “no streams” or “wrong episode” problems.

Troubleshooting

Problem Fix
Wrong episode plays Open the series from the Anime Kitsu catalog, not from Cinemeta
No streams for a new episode Wait a few hours after airing, or enable more anime providers
Subtitles out of sync See subtitle sync issues
Green or black screen with 10-bit releases See green screen fix

Legal note: only stream anime you have the right to watch in your country. See Is Stremio legal?.
