If you have read any Stremio guide, you have seen the word debrid: “Torrentio with Real-Debrid”, “[RD+] cached”, “best debrid service”. This page explains what a debrid service is, how it works with Stremio and whether you actually need one.
What is a debrid service?
A debrid service (from “unrestricted downloader”) is a paid service that downloads files to its own servers and streams them to you over a normal, fast HTTPS connection. It originally existed to unlock premium download speeds on file hosts; today, for Stremio users, its main job is to turn torrent results into instant streams.
Popular examples are Real-Debrid, AllDebrid, TorBox, Premiumize, Debrid-Link and Offcloud.
How a debrid service works with Stremio
Without debrid, a torrent add-on like Torrentio streams peer-to-peer: your device connects to other users (seeders) and downloads pieces of the file while you watch. Speed depends on how many seeders there are, and your IP address is visible to the swarm.
With debrid, the flow changes:
- You open a movie in Stremio. Your stream add-on (Torrentio, Comet, MediaFusion…) finds matching torrents.
- The add-on asks your debrid service whether it already has each file. Files it has are cached.
- When you click a cached stream, Stremio plays it directly from the debrid server over HTTPS.
- If you click an uncached one, the debrid service downloads it first, then it becomes playable.
That is why Torrentio shows [RD+] for files cached on Real-Debrid (instant) and [RD download] for files that are not cached yet.
Debrid vs P2P streaming
| P2P (no debrid) | With debrid | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | Monthly subscription |
| Start time | Seconds to minutes, depends on seeders | Seconds for cached files |
| 4K / high bitrate | Often buffers | Stable on a good connection |
| Old or niche titles | Few seeders, may not play | Plays if cached; otherwise must be downloaded |
| Your IP in the torrent swarm | Yes | No, the debrid server downloads |
| Upload from your device | Yes | No |
If you stay on P2P, a VPN such as NordVPN hides your IP from the swarm and helps if your ISP throttles torrent traffic. With debrid, a VPN is not needed for the stream itself. It can still help if your ISP blocks add-on domains, but some debrid services restrict VPN or shared IP ranges.
Which debrid services work with Stremio?
Support depends on the add-on, not on Stremio itself. These are the services supported by the main stream add-ons, according to their own configuration pages and documentation:
| Service | Torrentio | Comet | MediaFusion | AIOStreams |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Real-Debrid | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ |
| AllDebrid | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ |
| Premiumize | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ |
| TorBox | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ |
| Debrid-Link | ✅ | ✅ | — | ✅ |
| Offcloud | ✅ | ✅ | — | ✅ |
| EasyDebrid | ✅ | ✅ | — | ✅ |
| Put.io | ✅ | — | — | ✅ |
“—” means it is not listed in the add-on’s main documentation; it may still be supported.
We compare price, speed and features in detail in Best debrid service for Stremio and TorBox vs Real-Debrid.
Quick profiles
- Real-Debrid: the most widely supported and the default choice in most guides. Large cache of popular content. Setup: Torrentio + Real-Debrid.
- AllDebrid: a good alternative with broad add-on support. Setup: AllDebrid with Stremio.
- TorBox: newer service with its own add-on features; compared in TorBox vs Real-Debrid.
- Premiumize: includes cloud storage; uses a points-based fair-use system.
How to set up a debrid service in Stremio
- Subscribe to a debrid service.
- Copy your API key from the service’s account page (for Real-Debrid: real-debrid.com/apitoken).
- Open the configure page of your stream add-on (for example torrentio.strem.fun/configure).
- Select the debrid provider and paste the key.
- Install the add-on and open any movie: cached streams are marked with the service’s tag (for example [RD+]).
The same key works in several add-ons, so you can keep a backup such as Comet installed in case Torrentio is down. See Torrentio alternatives.
Do you really need debrid?
You probably do not need it if:
- you watch mostly popular, recent titles that have many seeders;
- you watch in 1080p or lower on a decent connection;
- you do not want another subscription.
It is worth it if:
- streams buffer often or take long to start (see buffering fixes);
- you watch 4K HDR content;
- you do not want your device to take part in P2P sharing;
- you use Stremio on a TV or Firestick, where P2P is slower.
Things to know before subscribing
- Personal use: accounts are personal. Most services limit use to one IP address at a time; sharing an account across households can get it banned.
- Cache is not everything: very old or obscure files are often not cached and must be downloaded first.
- API key = password: add-on install links contain your key. Do not share them; regenerate the key if it leaks.
- Region and payment: availability and payment options vary by country; check the service’s site before buying.
- Legal: debrid services are legal tools, but you are responsible for what you stream. Read Is Stremio legal?.
Debrid vs Usenet
Some newer add-ons (AIOStreams, Comet) also support Usenet providers. Usenet is a separate network of paid news servers; it does not use torrents at all. It is more technical to set up and usually requires an indexer plus a provider. For most Stremio users, a debrid service is the simpler option.
